Wine, types of wine, wine ratings - it's all so confusing! |

Wine selection requires knowledge of the various types of wine and is assisted by the proper use of wine ratings
Selecting wine can be a daunting task. If you are buying a jug for your own enjoyment, then your task is easy. But if you are going to share with someone, especially someone you want to impress, you need to be familiar with the available types of wine and where they are produced. Wine ratings can be a big help, but only if used as a guide. The person recommending the wine may have completely different taste than you and may promote certain types of wine over others based on personal preference. Therefore, it helps to look at several wine ratings for a particular selection before making your decision. Most wine shops, including online shops, are aware of this dilemma. They go out of their way to help their customers understand the differences (and similarities) between the various types of wine and will often offer one or more wine ratings for each one. When you shop for wine online, be on the lookout for helpful hints. Usually, the wines are categorized by types of wine (red, white, sparkling, dessert, etc.), region where produced or both. Wine ratings are often included in the product description. It isn't hard to understand the way wine is rated. (Coming up with the rating can be another story.) Wine ratings are usually done on a scale of 1 to 100, but ratings of less than about 60 are usually not given. Certain types of wine will score higher ratings on average than others. If you are passionate about a variety that isn't in vogue at the moment, the ratings for that wine may be lower than you might expect, but don't let that stop you from buying. You can seldom go wrong buying wines with ratings above 90, except that it might cost you. It's probably a good idea to taste anything that has been consistently rated less than 85 before you buy it unless the price is really low. Below are links to wine websites that will help you educate yourself about the different types of wine available. They also offer wine ratings and tasting notes for some or all of their products to help you in your selection. Wines Directory
